We’re settled into the calm, green embrace of Golfito Bay at Fishhook Marina, and this stop has come with a special treat. Our longtime friend Steve Lewis has joined us for a visit. Peter and I worked with Steve during our days at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, and later at Red Wing Shoe Company. These days he calls San Jose, Costa Rica home, and he made the trip down to Golfito to spend time with us on Hazel.
Tomorrow he’ll cast off with us as we head north to meet the trades. The plan is to drop him at Quepos Marina, where he’ll catch a flight home. His time on the water will be about twenty two hours, which is the length of our sail from Fishhook to Quepos.
Leaving brings mixed emotions. Fishhook Marina has been a beautiful, peaceful stop, full of wildlife and warm people. But the horizon is calling, and new adventures are waiting just beyond it.
Steve Lewis arrives Golfito!
Golfito has an amazing little pizzeria that turns out truly incredible pies, all served in a simple, no‑frills setting. If you happen to overindulge, there’s even a tailor right across the road who can help adjust the waistband you just tested.
Golfito Bay is also home to a large shrimp farm. I’m not up to date on market prices, but this farm sells medium shrimp for about thirty‑two cents each, which feels like a bargain for something that fresh.
The back end of Golfito Bay is pure jungle paradise, where the shoreline disappears into deep green and the water feels completely untouched.
Sunsets on the bay are absolutely epic, lighting up the water and the jungle in unforgettable color.
Hasta la próxima, tus tres amigos.
